Lent & Holy Week 2016

Dear Friends,

The prayerful season of Lent comes upon us relatively early this year, doesn’t it?  It seems we have no sooner put away our decorations for the joyful season of Christmas, and now, we are invited to enter into a more reflective time of contemplating our faith.

To assist us in taking full advantage of this time of reflection, you will find with this mailing several opportunities to experience times of prayer and reflection, both privately and communally.  They can range from prayer services to invited guests to speak to us on the Year of Mercy, that we have entered into by decree of the Holy Father. And, of course, many opportunities to experience the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

All leading up to that week we refer to as Holy, where we re-live the Passion of Christ and end with the rejoicing of Easter, and the choruses of Alleluias are re-released in our praises of God.

Be assured of my prayers for all of you and know that I will be asking that this Lent be a time of Spiritual renewal for all of us.

May the blessings of our Risen Lord be yours,

Lenten Fasting and Abstinence

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of both fasting and abstinence.

All other Fridays during the season of Lent are days of abstinence.

Abstinence:  Every person 14 years of age or older must abstain from meat (and items made with meat) on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all the Fridays of Lent.

Fasting: Every person ages 18-59 must fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
Fasting refers to eating only one full meal a day with small portions
that do not constitute a full meal at the other two meal times.

Jubilee of Mercy

Lord Jesus Christ,
You are the visible face of the invisible Father,
of the God who manifests his power above all by
forgiveness and mercy:
let the Church be your visible face in the world,
it's Lord risen and glorified.
You willed that your ministers would also be
clothed in weakness
in order that they may feel compassion ofr those in
ignorance and error:
let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved,
and forgiven by God.

We ask this of you, Lord Jesus, through the intercession
of Mary, Mother of Mercy, you who live and reign with
the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen

                                                                             - from the Prayer of Pope Francis for the Jubilee
