St. Martin de Porres Parish

Spring 2018 Newsletter

Dear Friends,

It is almost the end of April as I write this and finally, FINALLY, the temperature has reached the 60s and it feels like a heat wave.  A few days ago as I was driving and the temps were in the 30s, I saw a sign in front of a church that read, “April is the new February.”  Only to be out done by the sign in front of the Cal-Mum school building that read, “Spring? Where are you?”

However, I am an eternal optimist; Spring has always come before and it’s going to come again.  When – is anybody’s guess!  But it will happen.

We still have much to look forward to as Spring continues to unfold.  A new pictorial directory, the gala for Patrick Place, First Communions and confirmations and graduations (St. Columba is hosting the baccalaureate commencement). So we have a lot to look forward to.

In all of these things I hope we are able to find the joy of Christ being revealed to us.  Especially in the milestones our young people will be experiencing as they take on greater responsibilities in life.

Be open to how Christ makes himself known to us and see how your faith blossoms forth as well.

God bless, Fr. John

Ministries

We have a need for people to join our ministries. Please consider joining one of the following:

Altar servers - Any boy or girl in the third grade or above: we would be very happy to have you participate in this ministry.  Also, parents, would you ever consider serving alongside your son or daughter?  Think of what a great witness it would be to them to see you participating.  Some of our churches have already done this and it has proven to be a really positive experience.

Funerals - We have adults who help serve at our funerals, but it would be great to have you serve at any of our Masses on the weekends.

Lectors - There is always a need for people to help proclaim the Word of God.  Don’t worry, you will be trained, it is not difficult and you will likely be partnered with someone to assist you.

Eucharistic Ministers - The ministry of the distribution of the Body and Blood of Christ is also needed.  And before you try to excuse yourself by saying “I’m not worthy.”  Fr. John would counter that with “God made you; therefore, you ARE worthy.”

Cantors/choir members - St. Augustine said, “When you sing you pray twice!”  What better way than to make a joyful noise unto the Lord!  Or as I like to say, if you have a good voice, sing like you are thanking God and if you have a bad voice, sing like you are getting revenge!

Ushers - We are always on the lookout for parishioners to welcome others, hand out bulletins at the end of Mass and help those who may come in late to find seats.
